The Santa Debates

Found in:  Christmas; Communication and Collaboration; Critical Thinking; Group Discussion; Listening & Following Directions; Staying on Task

I teach AP English with mostly seniors. By this time of year, they've already worked fairly extensively with argument. I introduce a basic debate format and skills, so we use those to hold Santa debates. They have to research topics such as "Resolved: Reindeer can fly," and "Resolved: Without Santa, the elves would be unemployed" among many others. By using basic debate skills, they have to argue, develop counter arguments, and employ good listening skills. They have a lot of fun, and surprisingly, use a lot of scientific facts as supporting evidence. It's a great way to keep them on task at an exciting and challenging time of year.
