Thoughts and prayers for families and victims of Sparks, NV tragedy

WASHINGTON - October 21, 2013 -

The Nevada State Education Association (NSEA), the National Education Association (NEA), and their members are shocked and saddened by the shooting that took place in Sparks Monday morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of math teacher, Michael Landsberry and the families of those impacted by this tragedy. NEA and NSEA stand together with educators and the Sparks school community and we offer our support as they face challenging days ahead.
As educators, we are committed to ensuring the safety of our students and staff who work in schools. We expect the national conversation about school safety will be heightened, but the fact remains, most school campuses are still among the safest places students can be. Nevertheless, NEA and NSEA will continue to advocate for stronger measures to ensure the safety of students and school personnel so future tragedies can be avoided.
