NEA’s Human and Civil Rights Department and Center for Social Justice invite you to the 2019 Conference on Racial and Social Justice in Houston, July 1 and 2.  In the year since our last conference, education activists have stepped up  ̶  online and on the ground, in schools and in communities, and from kindergarten to college  ̶  to be agents of change in the fight for racial, social and economic justice in public education.  For the first time in our nation’s history, the majority of students in public schools are students of color.  Yet, the inequities in our school system continue, ranging from under-resourced schools, fewer enrichment opportunities and overcrowded classrooms to higher rates of discipline, greater concentrations of inexperienced teachers and less access to Advanced Placement courses.  At times, our activism and advocacy for racial equity in public education can leave us feeling isolated and depleted.  That is why the theme of our conference this year is Plug In, Connect, Recharge.

We invite you to join other educators, students, parents and families, organizers, community members in a space designed to encourage collaboration, creativity and shared experiences. Through interactive workshops, sessions, music, storytelling, and skill building, attendees will learn from and support each other, access information and resources, and develop plans and strategies to improve educational opportunities for communities of color, LGBTQ and women in your school and community.
